A Synthesis of the Effects of Natural Disturbance and Post- Disturbance Management on Streamflow, Stream Temperature, Suspended Sediment, and Aquatic Invertebrate Populations

چکیده
Some of the most dramatic effects of climate change are expected to be changes in the hydrologic regime. Increased temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns have the potential to alter both the availability and quality of freshwater. The purpose of this synthesis article is to review the research on the effects of natural disturbance (focused on wildfire and insect infestation) and post-disturbance management actions on key watershed processes or values, including the streamflow magnitude and timing, stream temperature, suspended sediment, and aquatic invertebrate population dynamics.

Modeling of streamflow- suspended sediment load relationship by adaptive neuro-fuzzy and artificial neural network approaches (Case study: Dalaki River, Iran)
Modeling of stream flow–suspended sediment relationship is one of the most studied topics in hydrology due to itsessential application to water resources management. Recently, artificial intelligence has gained much popularity owing toits application in calibrating the nonlinear relationships inherent in the stream flow–suspended sediment relationship. Thisstudy made us of adaptive neuro-fuzzy ...
متن کاملThe Role of Natural Vegetative Disturbance in Determining Stream Reach Characteristics in Central Idaho and Western Montana
We evaluated the relationship between natural vegetative disturbance and changes in stream habitat and macroinvertebrate metrics within 33 randomly selected minimally managed watersheds in central Idaho and western Montana. Changes in stream reach conditions were related to vegetative disturbance for the time periods from 1985 to 1993 and 1993 to 2000, respectively, at the following three spati...
متن کاملDetermination of the Best Model to Estimate Suspended Sediment Load in Zaremrood River, Mazandaran Province
Extended abstract 1- Introduction The phenomena of erosion, sediment transport, and sedimentations have tremendously destructive effects on the environment and hydraulics structures. In general, the sediment transportation depends on river discharges, but the proposed equations inherited serious errors. The estimation of suspended sediment load (SSL) is one of the most important factors in r...
متن کاملPersistent Effects of Wildfire and Debris Flows on the Invertebrate Prey Base of Rainbow Trout in Idaho Streams
Wildfire and debris flows are important physical and ecological drivers in headwater streams of western North America. Past research has primarily examined short-term effects of these disturbances; less is known about longer-term impacts. We investigated wildfire effects on the invertebrate prey base for drift-feeding rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum) in Idaho headwater streams a dec...
متن کاملEvolution of aquatic insect behaviours across a gradient of disturbance predictability.
Natural disturbance regimes--cycles of fire, flood, drought or other events--range from highly predictable (disturbances occur regularly in time or in concert with a proximate cue) to highly unpredictable. While theory predicts how populations should evolve under different degrees of disturbance predictability, there is little empirical evidence of how this occurs in nature. Here, we demonstrat...
